Wondering how your child is moving or developing?

We live in a world of so many opinions, comparisons and 'shoulds' when it comes to raising a little one.

One of the major concerns for parents is often whether they are developing at a rate that is 'normal' or 'expected'

"my sister's baby is walking by now... why is my little one not yet?"
"she said that if he skips crawling, this will screw up his walking and development"
"he is so unsettled and hates tummy time so much"
"Am I doing the right thing?"

As a new mother and physiotherapist, I have heard these questions from so many loving families. I have also asked these to myself.

I am here to help support you during this new journey of yours. To guide your intuitive instincts as a parent and provide reassurance and guidance.

A Movement & Development Check is a relaxed, play-based physiotherapy appointment for babies and children.

It can provide reassurance, practical ideas and guidance when you have questions about your child’s movement, development, coordination or physical confidence.

You do not need a diagnosis or referral, and you do not need to be certain that something is wrong before booking.

Who are the checks helpful for?

You do not need to have a list of things that are 'wrong' for a check to be helpful.

But, it can be reassuring to get some support when you may notice some of the following things:

Babies

Difficulty or distress with tummy time
A preference for looking or turning toward one side
Differences in head shape or body symmetry
Concerns about rolling, sitting, crawling or pulling to stand
An 'unusual' movement or crawling pattern
Stiffness, floppiness or difficulty changing positions
Development following prematurity, illness or an extended hospital stay
Uncertainty about what activities are appropriate for your baby
Unsettled or tension in the body after birth
Difficulties with feeding
Difficulty with sleeping positions and seeming 'uncomfortable'

Toddlers and children

Acute or chronic pain
Frequent falls or appearing less steady than other children
Toe walking or an unusual walking pattern
Difficulty running, jumping, climbing or using stairs
Reduced confidence at playgrounds or during physical play
Challenges with balance, coordination or motor planning
Difficulty keeping up with peers
Fatigue, reduced endurance or avoidance of physical activity
 Hypermobility or concerns about posture
Loss of a previously developed movement skill.

What will families recieve?

A Movement & Development Check may not automatically lead to ongoing therapy.

For some children, reassurance and a few practical ideas may be all that is needed!

Following the check, families will receive:

An explanation of what was observed
Reassurance where development appears appropriate
Practical strategies to support movement through play and everyday routines
Advice about what to monitor over time
Guidance about whether further physiotherapy may be beneficial
Recommendations for another health professional where appropriate

Movement check vs full comprehensive  physiotherapy assessment

Emily can help you choose the most appropriate appointment if you are unsure.

Movement & Development Check
Best suited to families seeking:

Simple strategies
Help deciding whether further assessment is needed.

Comprehensive Physiotherapy Assessment
May be recommended when:

Concerns are more complex or longstanding
Your child has multiple medical or developmental needs

Formal goals, reports or ongoing therapy are needed
Information is required for an NDIS plan, medical team, school or other service.
